Another benefit of running the pump longer rather than sorter: chlorine generation (for pools so equipped). One risk of running the pump longer rather than shorter: reduced pump life. After paying for a new pump motor a few years ago, I now run my pump no more than 8 hours per day.
I just break down my DE and clean it about once a month. I've found that backwashing it tends to be inefficient.
DE? English Please lol 😂
wish I would have seen this video first before I did mine , lol

Very informative and descriptive, you are an excellent teacher my friend.
No sand in the sight glass. Just small sand in the pool. I vacuum every other day.
You may have dead algae, mustard algae is very fine and looks like sand. If your pool was green and is now clear then it’s probably dead algae which will be all over the floor of the pool. If it was sand from the filter it will only accumulate at the bottom under each return jet in the pool and not all over the pool. In order to remove this sediment you need to vacuum to waste, because if you vacuum in the filter position it is so fine that it will go through the filter and back into the pool. When you vacuum to waste you will have to add water to the pool. Once you are done with this then you will vacuum the pool in the filter position for normal vacuuming and cleaning.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies my pool was never green, but that does sound like maybe what it is. I can try to do it to waste. I also brought a separate tool that I use. It’s a handheld vacuum that works very fine but I’m still getting accumulations in the pool. maybe I need to post a picture of what it looks like.
You are the best. I am a new pool owner and I see a little sand daily is that good? I back washed the tank like you said.
Normally you should not see sand in the sight glass but this can happen. You want to keep a close watch, if this continues or this gets worse then you may need to check the laterals inside your filter. If you have a damaged lateral or laterals inside the tank then sand will go back into the pool. If this is the case, l do sell all these parts and if you need help email your contact info and l will be glad to help. My email is on my RUclips channel. Thanks for watching.
Are you sure it's sand? Sometimes algae can look like sand. If it's sand, brushing won't disperse the sand and itll stay solid If it disburses and you can't see it after brushing, it's algae
@@listen4159 its vaccums up. So I assume its sand.
@@YRREBLRAK that's not a very good tale. Sand and algae can be vacuumed. Need to do the above to ensure it's not just algae
It must be alge but it looks brown.
I’ve owned in ground pools for 25yrs. This is by a very very very wide margin the most concisely informative demonstration of the what and how of pool vacuuming I have ever seen. Excellent job.
My sand pool pump has not skimmer or drain valves on it. The water I put in the skimmer basic just drains out (into the pool, i think). What do I do to prime the pump again? I am stumped, sop I dare not restart the pool pump again, until I have resolved this.
You can still prime your pump it may just take a little longer. If you install valves on the skimmer and drain lines it will be much easier and you can also regulate each line, especially when you vacuum. Thanks for watching.
❤❤Your AWSOME! I just paid a pool place and they can't find the leak so thank you . They didn't do anything you did .they just squrited dye . So I am hoping I can do some of this , per your Excellent Instructions. QUESTION... I'm ordering the 1022 from Amazon. But someone from leslies pool supply told me , if I had an inground pool 30k gallons that i needed a 2inch for my skimmer baskets , so im a little confused. could you please address this . And if I do need a 2 inch what would I get ? I didnt see a 2 inch 1022 ... Also is there any reason to turn the skimmer basket valves off when plugged ,because of pressure on the motor? Thank you in advanced , im gonna follow you i hope you share more info on pools , and anything else . I lost my husband and im trying to learn to care for the home ....and pool ❤❤❤❤❤❤🙏🏼
There are a lot of questions that l have. (Size of pump, filter, number of skimmers and the type of pool and the equipment that you have etc.) In order to help you better, check out my patreon page where l can work with you one on one. I not only do phone sessions but l also do virtual service calls and l can even help with the leak that you have. If you need this l will be glad to help. Thanks for watching.
It is faster, cheaper and a smart decision to replace the sand filter entirely with a cartridge or DE filter. Problem solved, and superior filtration from these replacements. Save water and chemical costs too.
Excellent video. Very informative.
I have a colmans above groundpool. It didnt come with a skimmer. How do i backwash the filter . I have the hose but dont know where to hook it up. Anyone out there could help me
If you don’t have a skimmer then you will have an outlet on the side of the pool which is your suction outlet. Your hose will go from the suction outlet directly to the suction side of the pump. The hose on top of the pump goes to the multiport of the filter if you have a sand filter. The return outlet on the multiport has a hose that will go to the return on the pool (this is the pressure line). You should have instructions with your pool that will show how to hook up everything. You can also contact Coleman and talk to customer support for help. Thanks for watching.
I’m in Canada and I need to do this on two areas of my liner. I’m curious why it’s okay for water to get behind the liner? Where does that water go? If it stays behind the liner won’t it freeze in the winter and expand? It’s okay for water to end up trapped behind the liner?🤔
It’s fine if water gets behind the liner, the water will not get trapped and will dry. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies again, thank you!!!!
Can I vacuum with my sand filter in the “bypass” position? I just opened my pool and my sand filter’s outer shell/egg cracked. It’s 2 weeks before a new filter can be installed and I still need to vacuum my pool and don’t want the debris sitting in it for the next two weeks.
Yes, you can vacuum to waste and bypass the filter but you will have to add water to the pool. When you are done vacuuming you can put the filter in the recirculate position. In recirculate you are not filtering the water but you can at least move the water in the pool until the new filter is installed. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies okay, thank you so much!
We accidentally pulled the lateral assembly out of the sand and water when trying to put it together. Do we need so start over or is it safe to push the lateral assembly back down to the bottom?
The lateral assembly needs to be at the bottom of the filter. In order to get the assembly in place you will have to remove the sand and start over. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies I figured thanks for the response. Any tips on keeping it centered at the bottom when filling with sand?
On most filters there is a notch at the bottom of the filter to set the lateral assembly. Once in place, hold the lateral assembly down while pouring in the sand.
Don’t overlook the possibility that the pump simply has more horsepower than the return lines (suction side lines) can match. Remember the pump can push water out at very high pressure and speed but return flow is generated by ambient air pressure which is only 14 psi. This could result in cavitation in the pump chamber so that those bubbles are water vapour created by the resultant vacuum in the chamber, not air bubbles from a leak. If you have a VS pump try gradually dialling down the RPM until inbound flow can keep up with outbound push. (By all means also check for leaks, clogged lines and closed valves.)
Starving the pump. Thanks for watching.
Can you use wedges
Yes, most people that have troubled areas around the pool will use liner lock (screen molding) or nickels as a wedge to help hold the liner in place. However, if the liner is locked in good it should not come out of the track. Thanks for watching.
Great! I can’t find your email address!
My email is located in the “more info” section on my RUclips channel.
I replaced my lateral assembly, as well as the sand - it didn’t seem to solve my problem. I can vacuum the pool clean, and after running my filter for just a few hours I’ve got dark spots at the bottom of my pool again. Any suggestions?
If you are vacuuming a pool that was algae infested or you had mustard algae, but the pool is clear now then you would want to vacuum the sediment to waste. Vacuuming to waste will bypass the filter, however you will have to add water to the pool. Once this fine sediment is out of the pool then you will vacuum in the filter position for normal vacuuming and cleaning. Thanks for watching.

We have vacuumed to waste, as well as vacuumed with independent vacuums that aren’t attached to the filter. The sand (or potentially algae) always returns to the bottom of the pool after the filter has been running for a few hours. Is it possible the new lateral is broken? Or can the algae be returning when the filter is on? Thank you!
Fine sediment should be vacuumed to waste. Dead algae or mustard algae is so fine it will go through the filter back into the pool. Do not use an automatic cleaner because it will stir up the sediment and it will also run through the cleaner back into the pool. Once all this fine sediment is out of the pool you will be fine. I believe that your filter is good, if one of the laterals is broke then you would have a lot of sand at the bottom of each return jet in the pool. If this sediment is all over the floor of the pool it is dead algae and it looks like sand. Sand will only accumulate at the floor under the return jets of the pool, not the whole entire pool.
Clearly he doesn't like wheels
Hi, Mark! My issue is that a small pinhole leak has appeared in the valve housing (i think you call it the hub.) Is there a way to just replace that outer piece? OR - is there a way for me to disassemble the valve and seal the hole/hairline crack? Any tips would be great! thanks for the super-helpful videos.
Because the valve is under pressure you can not seal it because it will eventually leak. If the valve has a pin hole or crack in it then you will need to replace the whole valve. Because the hub or body of the valve is damaged, replacing the valve will be cheaper than buying just the body. If you need a valve l do sell the valve as well as all the parts. If you email your contact info, l will be glad to help. My email is on my RUclips channel. Thanks for watching.
Thanks - - I'd forgotten about the filter drain plugs!
How can determine if my wiring is 110 or 220 from the previous set up..I'm no electrician there was a pool here and I found how to get power to the recepical at the pool. 1) what power is coming out from the source? 2) so I need to open up the pump motor also to determine the setting? 3) the only thing I know is, 220 has a huge plug compared to a 110. The pump has a small plug and the power source has a small plug but the cord is thick very heavy gage wire.
By code pumps that plug in are supposed to be 110V. Once you have determined the voltage from the supply then you can change the setting on the motor. If you have a volt meter this will help determine what your feed is. You should have a schematic on the motor so you can convert from 110V to 220V. The newer pumps have a switch in the back of the motor which will allow you to convert from 110V to 220V. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video - One suggestion - back off on the main drain suction to direct more to the skimmer-
Do you have any recommendations on the best cordless pool vacuum for algae?
I do know maytronics who makes dolphin cleaners have cordless units. I like plug in because they have constant power and are more powerful. If you need help l do sell these cleaners. If you would like to email your contact info l will be glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Replaceing seats
Should the site glass get sand in it
No, however it can happen. If you recently changed sand this can happen. Watch it and if it continues to get sand or it gets worse then you may have to check the laterals inside the filter. If it stops then you should be fine. Thanks for watching.
Thanks!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
I like this type of vacuuming my pool. Thank you!
The shaft of the diverter on my has the white spacer, the O ring, then a bottom notch for the second O ring. I purchased a new diverter, and found it does not come with the spacer or two O rings on the shaft. Can you please give me the part numbers for the small white spacer and two small O rings on the diverter shaft???
I have all the parts for this valve to include the valve linked down below in the description of this video. If you need help, email your contact info and l will be glad to help. Thanks for watching.
I have just converted my sand to cartridge filter. Flow is better, takes up less space. Never going back to sand.
would love to know how/when to clean the sand in my Hayward SwimPro sand filter.
Sand on average is replaced in the filter about every 3 to 5 years. As far as backwashing and rinsing the filter, you will backwash and rinse the filter on average during the swimming season about every 7 to 10 days. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies thank you but I'm referring to a chemical cleaning of the sand.
It depends on the type of chemicals you are using, you can chemically treat and clean the sand on a yearly basis. If not your sand will be fine and in 3 to 5 years from now just change it. Changing the sand with new is always better than cleaning.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies thank you
Thank you !! This helped so much! Now I know exactly what’s going on with my sand pump !! Have a great day Mark!
My pool liner has turned dark blue due to the pool cleaner having added soda Ash/ sodium carbonate to it...could u pls suggest how to get original crystal clear light blue color back pls advice...will be so grateful to u...thanks 😊🙏
Without knowing your water balance, l would recommend that you have your pool water tested at your local pool store. They should be able to help. Thanks for watching.
@HallmarkPoolSupplies OK...I'll get that done...thank you so much for responding 😊🙏
Thanks for the Beautiful explanation video.
Very important vidios
What about the sand filter settings - set it to filter while vacuuming, and then backwash?
Yes, thanks for watching.
I have just vacuumed my pool through filtration, after vacuum i done a long backwash and rinse, I then had dirty, cloudy water shooting back into my pool through the returns. I then done a backwash and rinse again, but now my pump and filter are not fully priming ?????
If the pump was fully primed before and during the backwash and rinse procedure then the pump should maintain prime. The first thing l would check is the water level in the pool. I would also check your skimmer basket and the skimmer’s weir door. Make sure the basket is not clogged and the weir is not stuck. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies all that’s been done Mark, possibly a blockage somewhere 🤔
If you put your filter in the recirculate position and the pump runs good then the issue is the filter. You may need to backwash and rinse again or change the sand. If in the recirculate position the pump is not wanting to prime then the issue may be with the pump. If the pump’s impeller is clogged or restricted this can happen.
i learned a lot. Thanks mark
super clear sir. im your follower.
So smart, Thank you

You were helpful in answering my question about my pool and I have another issue and hoping you can lead me in the right direction. Yesterday, my pool was clear and after heavy rain all day yesterday, I checked my water the following morning and it was cloudy, I am guessing from the rain in the midwest. I checked my pool and saw it had little to no free chlorine. So I added 2 gallons of liquid shock to my 32,000 gallons of water. Later in the day, I added a bag of pool salt and instantly my pool was white and foamy. The white foam went away in a few minutes after I stirred the water. I have never had foamy water after adding pool salt. I did not get my water tested at a local store but the last time it was cloudy from rain, I was told to add 2 G shock and 2 bags of salt. That is why I did what I did today. Any idea as to why salt instantly caused foamy water? Thanks
There could be other levels off so it's best to get your water professionally tested at a pool store. If the pool is getting cloudy, that is usually an indication that the free chlorine is low. However, I would recommend a cal-hypo shock over liquid shock (stronger). In regards to the salt, only add salt if your level has dropped below recommended level, to much salt is not good either. Thanks for watching.
Hey Mark. I love your channel. I was changing out my sand yesterday and when I loosened the multiport, the pipe on the lateral assembly did not disengage. I sprayed some lubricant on it but it's not budging. I have a Pentair SD40. I was still able to vacuum most of the sand out except for right at the center floor, where the assemble is supposed to sit. Do you have any tricks or recommendations for this? Thanks. Paul
You should be able to remove the standpipe from the multiport valve. Wiggle the pipe or use a pair of channel locks but be careful. Once you have removed the standpipe you can lightly sand and lube the end of the standpipe. You can also lube the underside of the valve where the standpipe goes in. This will allow the standpipe to go back in easily, and it will also help in the removal of the standpipe down the road. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies: Hey Mark! The channel locks worked great and I was able to get the pipe off and changed out the sand. I also lubed up both of the pieces for easier access next time out. Thanks again. Paul
Amazon says they have rebuild kits including the spider gasket. What is the part called that you can’t get the gasket for so I can order it???
When I search for Cari-flow valve, it always leads me to the whole assembly. All I need is the metal shaft part that has the spider gasket. Why does Amazon say they have just the gasket?
Vari-flow
At one time you could order just the gasket for the diverter on a 714 T top mount multiport ,Hayward no longer offers the gasket separate. Today the gasket is molded on to the diverter. If you have a 710 series side mount multiport then you can order the spider gasket by itself. You have to make sure that you are getting the right part or gasket that you need, because there is a difference. If you need help, email your contact info and l will be glad to help. My email is on my RUclips channel. Thanks for watching.
I just sent you an email, inquiring about the key assembly, how much it costs, and does it have the O rings installed on the shaft, as well as the spider gasket? I live in S Florida, and I need it soon, so I won’t have to fight an algae war after repairing the valve, lol!
Do you have a video replacing the whole value/housing ? I had a pressure gage just blowout. I wrapped it with Teflon tape and was able to screw back and it’s sticking. But now I am afraid so I just got a whole new unit but would like to see how it’s done. Not sure if it’s all unions or if I have some pipescemented.
I made a video on changing the sand with this exact filter. l do show how to remove the valve and how to replace after changing the sand, hopefully this will help. Thanks for watching.
